This sculpture symbolizes the birth of new life in its elementary nature, the infinite vitality of natural species and their supremacy over human endeavors to change and dictate shape to the natural landscape. Form denies its original matter, and the mathematically derived composition yields a minimalist structure based in natural patterns.
It became a ‘beacon of hope for the future’ when the organizers of Sculpture by the Sea installed it as the only artwork on Sydney’s oceanside in 2020. Two years later, it was selected with 25 artworks from around the world to line the new Snowy Valleys Sculpture Trail in Batlow, an area formerly ravaged by a bushfire.
Sydney 2020
Sculpture by the Sea, the major international sculpture exhibition held in Sydney every year, was postponed because of the pandemic measures. Its organizers did not give up, though: as a “beacon of hope for the future” they installed a single work by the ocean, an 11-metre sculpture by the Prague artist Milan Kuzica (12 November – 7 December 2020, Marks Park, the southern headland of Bondi Beach).
The sculpture Green Life symbolizes the birth of new life in its elementary nature. For all its harmony, the idea now takes on a far greater urgency. It stresses that our future is possible only if we live our lives in harmony with nature. My inspiration was John Lennon’s song Imagine, his almost utopian vision of a harmonious world. Today we are threatened less by wars than we live in fear of a far more cunning enemy. In the fight against a global viral pandemic, continents do not matter; it knows no borders and cares neither for religion nor for the state of our economy. The solution is still the same. Together we share this world, pass between heaven and hell, and make our common future. The responsibility lies with each of us; we will all bear the consequences. It is a great test of our humanity! If we succeed, a “green life” awaits us at the end.
